Did you know …
That J.R.R. Tolkien, author of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and screenplaywrite behind The Hobbit, was an amateur naturalist? It’s true! He studied what he called “the rural ecology of olde Britain.”
According to JRR, the story for The Hobbit was actually based on the behavior of a group of stray cats. To Tolkien, it seemed as if the creatures had complex motivations and were acting out great deeds and adventures, and he simply transposed them to a fantasy setting. This is also why, in his original draft, Bofur was killed and eaten by a stray dog.
